Excavation works at Itafort, Itanagar.
Ita Fort in Itanagar town, is one of the most important historical sites in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The name literally means "Fort of bricks"( brick being called "Ita" in the Ahom language). The Ita Fort at Arunachal Pradesh was built as early as the 14th or the 15th century. The fort has an irregular shape, built mainly with bricks dating back to the 14th-15th Century. The total brickwork is of 16,200 cubic metre lengths which have been identified by some scholars with Mayapur of Ramachandra, a king of the Jitari Dynasty. The fort has three different entrances at three different sides, which are western, the eastern and the southern sides.
Ita Fort’s claim as a place of historical importance cannot be disputed however in terms of being a tourist destination it is overrated. Perched on top of a hill, cut by steep cliff on one side the view of the valley from here is astonishing, but as for the fort nothing much remained except for few blocks of bricks. The fort is different in the way that most forts I've come across are built with imposing-size stones, but here the fort is made of bricks. Efforts are being made to turn this into a serious tourist destination. When I went there it was already closed for renovation but I managed to sneak in and explore the place. A small view tower by the fort is a nice place to rest with the breeze brushing your face, with a view of the valley behind and an odd view of the fort.
The best time to visit itafort is between october and march as its cool n breezy this time.monsoon, between july and september should be avoided as sightseeing in this time is difficult due to rain.
